Yello Cab testing taxi meter with audio output

Beginning in August 2014, Yellow Cabs of Vancouver began testing a taxi meter with optional audio output. Any passenger, particularly those who are blind or partially sighted, may request the driver turn on the audio feature before the trip begins.

While ASIC is working closely with Yellow Cabs and the meter manufacturer to make adjustments to the meter's software, it currently provides an audio message when the meter is started and a further message announcing the total fare when the trip is complete. We are suggesting the following enhancements:

  • inclusion of the taxi company's name and vehicle number during the initial message;
  • incremental messages as the fare increases by three dollar increments; and
  • audio mesages to indicate when the meter has been placed in or taken out of stand-by mode.

We will provide regular updates as this testing period evolves.
