{"id":492,"date":"2021-01-13T14:01:43","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T14:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asicbc.ca\/?p=492"},"modified":"2021-01-13T14:01:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T14:01:43","slug":"translink-commits-to-automated-stop-enunciators-on-public-transit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asicbc.ca\/index.php\/2021\/01\/13\/translink-commits-to-automated-stop-enunciators-on-public-transit\/","title":{"rendered":"TransLink Commits To Automated Stop Enunciators on Public Transit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">TransLink, and its operating subsidiaries, Coast Mountain Bus Company (CMBC), SkyTrain and West Coast Express (WCE), have taken the lead role to provide \u201cUniversally Accessible Transit\u201d for the Metro Vancouver region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">More than two years ago, TransLink went to the experts \u00ad transit users with physical, sensory, cognitive or other mobility challenges plus agency and community representatives to conduct an extensive review and pinpoint key issues and develop a framework for making transit more accessible.\u00a0 The result was a comprehensive action plan called \u201cAccess Transit\u201d that is designed to remove both physical and logistical barriers that prevent people with disabilities from effectively using public transit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">The following is a snapshot of proposed and existing accessible features that support universal accessibility:<\/p>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">In the development and\/or Pilot Phase:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Universal Accessibility Guidelines\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Path-of-travel and tactile way-finding aids<\/li>\n<li>Universally accessible bus stop design criteria and guidelines<\/li>\n<li>Visual and auditory aids<\/li>\n<li>Elevator and ramp characteristics<\/li>\n<li>\u2018TMAC\u2019 (Transit Management and Communications)<\/li>\n<li>Audible and visual \u2018Next Stop\u2019 features provided for all stops; a pilot to be launched January 7, 2008 testing TMAC and these attributes on 4 new trolleys and 4 99-BLine buses.\u00a0 316 buses have been equipped with the audio-visual next-stop feature and will go into service following the pilot.<\/li>\n<li>Strategizing to equip all Metro Vancouver transit buses with the audible next-stop feature.<\/li>\n<li>Global Positioning (GPS) feature provides real-time service adjustments and enhances emergency response.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanware.com\/en-canada\/products\/gps\/trekker\">Humanware&#8217;s Trekker GPS device\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; Currently pilot-testing data within this hand-held GPS unit that will provide the user with audible directions within 30 feet of a bus stop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ms-rteElement-P\">Current Applications available to our customers at present:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/transit\">Google Transit\u00a0<\/a>&#8211; web-based tool, compatible with VIP screen-reading applications, allows for easy trip planning. In addition to being completely accessible to adaptive technology users, the site is available in 121 languages- a real bonus for those whose first language is one other than English.
