The<br \/>\nintroduction of talking meters, the first in Canada and possibly North America, is VTA\u2019s<br \/>\nlatest innovation towards fulfilling its commitment to serving people with disabilities<\/div>\n<div>and seniors.<\/div>\n<div>\n\u201cIt\u2019s been my honour to work with Rob Sleath from Access for Sight Impaired<br \/>\nConsumers and the CNIB, Jane Dyson from Disability Alliance BC, Lorraine Logan from<br \/>\nCouncil of Seniors Citizens Organizations, Jill Weiss from City of Vancouver Persons<br \/>\nwith Disabilities Advisory Committee and others to develop the training. And now<\/div>\n<div>we\u2019re delighted to introduce the wonderful talking meter,\u201d said VTA\u2019s Carolyn Bauer.<br \/>\nCustomers will be able to ask taxi drivers to turn on the\u00a0<a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/VTATalkingMeter.mp3\">optional audio feature<\/a>\u00a0at the<br \/>\nbeginning of their trip. The meters will announce the starting fare, the fare as it<br \/>\nincreases throughout the trip and the final fare amount. The meters will be installed<\/div>\n<div>in all new Vancouver taxis and will be used to replace all current meters as they age out.<\/div>\n<div>\n\u201cThis is a great example of private industry stepping up to help B.C. meet its<br \/>\nAccessibility 2024 goal of becoming the most progressive place for people with<br \/>\ndisabilities in Canada,\u201d said Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation Don<br \/>\nMcRae. \u201cThe Vancouver Taxi Association\u2019s new talking meter technology will provide<\/div>\n<div>an improved level of service for customers, including seniors and people with disabilities,<br \/>\nand particularly those who have visual challenges.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\n\u201cProviding quality service to people with disabilities is one of the most important<br \/>\nobligations we impose on our taxi companies. Innovations like this talking meter are<br \/>\nproof that the industry takes this responsibility seriously and is committed to<\/div>\n<div>accessible and inclusive service for all customers,\u201d said Vancouver City Councillor Geoff Meggs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe VTA strongly supports the Province\u2019s Accessibility 2024 Plan and the City of<br \/>\nVancouver\u2019s commitment to accessibility.
