Cineplex Entertainment Expands Digital Projection Technology Including Descriptive Service

As we reported in 2012, Cineplex Entertainment was working toward upgrading their 35mm projection equipment to state-of-the-art digital projection technology inclusive of descriptive services (DS). The upgraded DS, known as Fidelio, is now available at many of their theatres. Cineplex Entertainment is awaiting the arrival of additional equipment for installation in more of their entertainment complexes.

While the list below is current as of August 2013, we will update more locations offering DS as the information becomes available. We have listed each location as a hyperlink which will take you to the show time page for that location. This will make it easier to confirm DS presentations and applicable show times at that theatre.

While Cineplex Entertainment have headsets that guest can use, the system also allows theatre patrons to use their own headsets provided they are compatible with a standard (3.5mm) headset jack.

Cineplex Entertainment has included show times for movies available in Fidelio on the Cineplex Entertainment web site. Movies that have a DS or CC/DS as part of the show time listing are available using the Fidelio service. Cineplex Entertainment is still in the process of modifying their web site to make it easier to identify DS-equipped theatres and show times. However, in the meantime, you will be able to access the information either on the show time page for each theatre or by visiting the web page dedicated to CC/RWC/DVS

Not all films offered in Quebec are available with closed-captioning as Cineplex Entertainment is only able to get French language captioning from four of the major studios. If they are able to get captioning in French, it will be available in French or English, depending on what language the film is played in.

Cineplex Entertainment anticipates being able to offer described video in select Quebec theatres in early 2014. However, that is dependent on being able to get described video in French. At present, only one studio has committed to releasing some of its films with French described video. Until they are able to offer described video in French, Cineplex Entertainment is unable to offer the service in English in Quebec.
